The City of Porterville
The City of Porterville, lying at the foothills
of the Sierras, was incorporated in 1902.
The City is currently transitioning its method
of election from an at-large system to a
by-district system with five separate districts.
The City Council is comprised of five
members who are elected by their respective
districts to serve overlapping four-year
terms. Porterville is located on State Route
65, 165 miles from Los Angeles. The City
has a strategic central location to major
markets and a ready access to major
transportation routes. Porterville is the
center of a large farming area noted especially
for citrus and livestock. The Police
Department is staffed with 79 Sworn Officers
working in conjunction with 33 full-time

Under general supervision, a Police Officer
is responsible for the performance of law
enforcement duties to protect life and property
in accordance with applicable laws, to
carry out special assignments as necessary,
and other related duties as assigned.
A wide variety of assignments are available
which include Patrol Officer, K-9 Officer,
Traffic Officer, School Resource Officer,
Field Training Officer, Narcotics Investigations
Detective, General Investigations
Detective, Special (Gang) Investigations
Detective, and SWAT, MAIT, and OIS
Police Officer Academy Enrolled/
Complete: Lateral applicants must possess
a California Basic POST Certificate.
Entry level applicants must possess a
POST Law Enforcement Academy graduation
certificate or be currently enrolled in a
POST recognized Police Academy. Out of

Applications and evidence of qualifications
are due by 4:00 pm, February 7,
Qualified applicants will be invited to appear
before a Qualifications Appraisal
Board for an oral interview and will be required
to bring a completed Personal History
Statement. Immediately following the
interview, applicants will meet with a Department
supervisor to screen the Personal
History Statement. Applicants passing the
oral interview and screening of their Personal
History Statement will be placed on
an eligibility list. Prospective employees
will undergo a thorough background investigation
which will include a medical, psychological
and drug/alcohol screening.

Deferred Compensation: The ICMA Retirement

Advisors are available at the employee’s
Vacation: 176 hours per year for new
employees; 216 hours per year after 5
years; 236 hours per year after 10 years;
and 248 hours per year after 15 years.
Annual Sick Leave: 96 hours.
Health Insurance: Employee pays 2% of
base salary for employee’s own medical
insurance. The City pays for vision and
dental insurance. Employees may enroll
their dependent spouse and/or children at
a share of cost for medical, vision and dental
Life Insurance: City provides $100,000
Employee Assistance Program:
This benefit is provided to employees and
their families at no cost to the employee.
Education incentives include up to $4,000
per year tuition reimbursement, 2.5% for
Associates Degree, 2.5% for Bachelor’s
Degree and 2.5% for Master’s Degree.
Certificate incentives include 2.5% for
POST Intermediate Certificate and 2.5%
for POST Advanced Certificate,
Specialty Assignment Pay:
Specialty assignment pay includes 7.5%
for Investigations, 7.5% for K-9, 5% for
Special Weapons and Tactics Team, 5%
for Major Accident Investigations Team,
5% for Field Training Officer and 5% for
Experience pay includes 2.5% for Officers
with 5 years of experience, 5% for Officers
with 10 years of experience, 7.5% for Officers
with 15 years of experience, and 10%
for Officers with 20 years of experience.
Uniform Allowance: $1,100 per year.

Background Investigation Disqualifying

Applicants on criminal probation at time

Any unlawful use of any drug (including

Lack of a California driver’s license at
time of intended hire.
The following factors may be disqualifying:
Prior drug usage will be evaluated for
what was used, the extent of the use,
and how recent the usage has been
A misdemeanor conviction.
An arrest for which the punishment
could have been one year in County
Jail or imprisonment in State Prison.
Prior act(s) of theft.
Unlawful carrying of a concealed weapon.
A sex act in which the other party was
under eighteen years of age.
Demonstrated history of irresponsible
motor vehicle operation.
A “Failure to Appear” on your driving
A D.U.I. conviction.
